The Covid-19 pandemic has changed so many parts of our daily lives, including Social Security Disability hearings with administrative law judges. There have been a few updates to how these hearings work, and I’m here to walk you through them.

In-Person Social Security Disability Hearings:
- Pre-Covid: In-person hearings were the standard way to go.
- March 2020: Social Security closed its hearing offices to in-person appointments due to the pandemic.
- Fall 2021: Limited in-person hearings started back up.
- Today: You can still request an in-person hearing, but the wait time can be unpredictable. Many clients, especially those with health concerns, might prefer other options to stay safe.
Video Social Security Disability Hearings:
- How it Works: Social Security now offers video hearings via MS Teams. You and the judge can see each other, making the process more personal.
- Requirements: You’ll need a computer with a webcam or a smartphone, plus a stable internet connection. Remember, this might not be feasible if you live in a rural area with spotty service.
Phone Social Security Disability Hearings:
- Easy Option: For many, a phone hearing is the simplest and most reliable choice. It’s as easy as answering a call, and you don’t need any special technology or internet.
Social Security has done a great job adapting to these times, but each option has its own pros and cons:
Pros and Cons:
- In-Person Advantage: Some conditions just present better in person. For instance, physical symptoms like tremors from Parkinson’s, or the visible anxiety some clients experience, are easier to gauge face-to-face.
- Video/Phone Drawback: Issues like poor connections or technology compatibility can make video hearings tricky. On the other hand, phone hearings, while convenient, might miss some crucial non-verbal cues.
Making the Right Social Security Disability Hearing Choice:
- Flexibility: Whether it’s in-person, video, or phone, the format might not impact every client the same way.
- For Back Pain Clients: Sometimes sitting through a hearing is tough. Using the phone option can allow clients to move and stretch without worrying about appearances.
- Waiting Game: How long you can wait for your hearing might also affect your choice. Talk to an experienced representative to figure out which method will best suit your situation and ensure your case gets the attention it deserves.
By understanding your options, you can choose the Social Security Disability hearing format that works best for you and maximize your chances of a favorable outcome.
